Happy International Women’s Day 2019…a day in which we celebrate the idea that a balanced world is a better world. It is also a time for tough questions, such as how can we help forge a more gender-balanced world, how can we celebrate women’s achievement, raise awareness against bias and how can we take action for equality?
The campaign theme provides a unified direction to guide and galvanize continuous collective action, with #BalanceforBetter activity reinforced and amplified all year. What about the shipping industry? It is fair to say we have not had much success collectively when it comes to attracting female seafarers or even women into the wider industry ashore.
The Propeller Club is very proud to have signed the Women in Maritime Charter – in fact, we were one of the first organisations to do so. We would not exist if it weren’t for the skill, knowledge, expertise, determination and contacts that our local women in maritime have. Talk of equality doesn’t come close here in Liverpool – the men in maritime could only dream of having the drive, commitment, passion and energy of the women.
Liverpool is very much a matriarchal society, and that is very clear when you come to our events! So, we want to thank all those women who do so much to make our organisation all that it is, and we want to encourage more to come along and get involved. We want to be a place which shouts loudly of the amazing women in maritime today, and of the careers and successes they have…and which others can have too.
