Propeller Club Members descended on Singapore Maritime Week and hosted an Executive Roundtable on Crew Welfare. The event was facilitated by Steven Jones and Sue Henney – and they were joined by around 20 senior industry leaders to discuss the issues facing seafarers globally.
The Mission to Seafarers Executive Roundtable on Crew Welfare was a meeting held in Singapore on Tuesday, April 25, 2023. The event was sponsored by Idwal and Standard Club, part of NorthStandard, and supported by Inmarsat. The roundtable was attended by an invited panel of leading ship owners, managers, and charterers who discussed how to improve the welfare of seafarers.
The roundtable was organized by The Mission to Seafarers, a charity that provides support to seafarers around the world. The charity’s Director of Development, Jan Webber, said that the event was an opportunity to “translate the information that already exists in the industry, from the Seafarers Happiness Index and other initiatives, into real action that will improve crew conditions for seafarers, for the companies and, ultimately, for the industry.”
The roundtable discussed a range of issues affecting seafarers, including mental health, loneliness, and the challenges of working long hours away from home. The panelists also discussed the importance of data and research in improving crew welfare.
The roundtable concluded with a call for action from the maritime industry. The panelists urged stakeholders to work together to improve the welfare of seafarers and to make the industry a more attractive career choice.
