Propeller Club Liverpool hosts the 2016 annual charter lunch – this time in the wonderful surroundings of the Racquet Club, Liverpool.
We are thrilled to announce that leading maritime lawyer Stephen Askins will be speaking on the terrible case of the Seamans Guard Ohio, and the imprisonment of a number of British nationals, caught up in a dreadful case of confusion, double dealing, alleged gun running and employer abandonment. Two of the guards held in India are local, from Bootle and Chester. So this is an issue which is quite literally close to our hearts!
The lunch offers members the opportunity of hearing first-hand the dramatic stories of life at sea in our trouble world. Stephen Askins, partner in Tatham-Macinnes will share his insight on this contentious issue and other tales of travesty on the high seas.
The questionable incarceration of mariners going about their lawful business is a constant challenge. In Stephen’s words “The criminalisation of seafarers continues”. “There are now many examples of crew being locked up for doing their job”. Apart from his legal achievements, Stephen was listed in the Lloyd’s List Top 10 Law Personalities in the past three years which lists the most influential people in shipping; he also served 7 years as a Royal Marine prior to an extended stint at a major international law firm.
Stephen is a supporter of one of our football teams (we’ll let him tell you which!) he was described as having carved out a niche in the field of piracy and marine terrorism, with sources saying he is “the go-to guy for tricky situations involving hostages and hijacks.”
We are also pleased to announce that Fort Recruitment – www.fortrecruitment.co.uk have kindly agreed to sponsor our after lunch drinks to enable us to continue networking.
You will need to book early as there is sure to be a high demand for places so if you want to hear such an authoritative speaker talk about topics so close to home – reserve your place now!
