Hoylake based yacht training provider JPMA has announced the 2016 winner of its John Percival Leadership Award as Cy Wastell, first mate on board a private yacht.
The award was set up following the death in 2014 of JPMA founder John Percival, a keen ambassador for on-board training and encouraging investment in a yacht’s crew. JPMA, the yacht training centre he founded, and now run by his daughter, Anna Percival-Harris, aims to promote high standards in all levels of crew, in all departments, inspiring students to return to their vessel emboldened and ready to nurture junior crew. www.hss.ac.uk
John Percival was a man with much time and wisdom to share – he always had a story, some lessons to teach and a warm welcome for anyone who shared his passion for yachting. It is a testament to such a view of life, careers, mentoring and the industry that he should leave a lasting legacy in the form of the Leadership Award.
Congratulations to Cy Wastell – we hope that over a long career, the “Percival” effect will see many more young seafarers have a chance to learn and to led, and to in turn lead others too. Creating a generation of new leaders is not easy, but it is pivotal to everything that is important in shipping…regardless of vessel type.
