With us all being grounded and no longer jet setting all over the place, we have started to turn our attention closer to home. So have been encouraging our wonderful Propellerists to get out to our wonderful British beaches, to enjoy all that nature can bring…but also to get litter picking. We are always horrified by the amount of plastics which find their way onto our coastlines. Which either comes from the sea, which is worrying…or which we are allowing out to the oceans.
So, we asked members to get out and send us their news, views and photos of their time gathering the detritus. Thank you to the Glyn Williams family (the Geedubs) – as Rachel and Andrew GW took bags, gloves, litter pickers and their flock down to the sea at New Brighton on a wet, cold Sunday.

It is a huge concern that our seas and beaches are being ruined by litter and marine plastic, so we do hope that this serves as inspiration to us all and we can get back out and cleaning up.
We did hear that Andrew was pulling so hard on something buried in the beach that Crosby is now closer to NewBo than any time since the last Ice Age. Strong performance indeed.
It is impossible to downplay the severity of the pollution problem. Every day approximately 8 million pieces of plastic pollution find their way into our oceans. Plastics consistently make up 60 to 90% of all marine debris studied.
Approx 5,000 items of marine plastic pollution have been found per mile of beach in the UK. Over 150 plastic bottles litter each mile of UK beaches.
Recent studies have revealed marine plastic pollution in 100% of marine turtles, 59% of whales, 36% of seals and 40% of seabird species examined.
